Our latest book club pick is a bit of throwback. I first read this book, Jemima J, almost *cough* 20 years ago (yep, that makes me feel old!) when it was first published. It’s slightly dated in places because of that but still reads great and the story is still super relevant today, maybe even more so!
Jemima lives with two flatmates, works at a shadow of her ideal job and is overweight and depressed. She starts talking to a man online who lives in the US and gets her work friends to photoshop a picture of her to send to him because he’s a fitness nut. While falling for him via online chats, she begins to lose weight as she wants to fly out and meet him, What follows is a lesson on being happy with yourself, building your own confidence and the importance of adventure, independence and self belief. Jemima learns to go for her dreams rather than base her life around a man and comes unstuck several times in the process.
It’s cheesy in places (can we PLEASE stop using the word ‘hunk’ forever, its massively cringe) and slightly out of touch but ultimately a good easy read and very entertaining. if you’re a fan of chick-lit you’ll most probably like this one!
If you decide to give it a go, I’d love to know what you thought.
