Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Book Club Update

We’ve come to the end of another Sarah Hurley Book Club pick. In case you’ve missed it our latest pick was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. So let us tell you what we thought…

I have to say I began to give up on this book at the half way point. As much as I love the story of Pride and Prejudice, and I love the added zest and modern twist that the zombies gave to the book, period novels just aren’t my thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the zombie fight scenes, and the idea that even though it is set in the 18th Century, that men and women are equal when it comes to the combat of ‘unmentionables’. However I found myself just longing for a fight scene to come along to save myself from the confusion of the old language. At times I would find myself quickly having to google the characters names to make sure I was following correctly. Although that may sound a little silly, I guess period novels just aren’t for me.

I think when it comes to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies I might just have to stick to the movie version!

I agree with Chloe on this one! I found the book a bit slow going though I absolutely LOVE the concept. Maybe because I saw the movie first, I found the book a little bit hard going or maybe, as Chloe said, it was the language. If you’re into period novels or classics then this may be the one for you.

I mentioned in my previous post that I was also reading the graphic novel of this at the same time and I found that MUCH more enjoyable, the pictures helped the story to flow, gave it some context and just brought so much life to the story. Again, as I’d seen the movie previously, this may have been giving me the visuals I craved as it went along.

It’s not often I prefer the movie, or even the graphic novel (and I LOVE those!) but on this occasion, they would be my recommendation.

Thank you for reading. If you have any comments that you’d like to add we’d love to hear from you. Just drop us a comment below or get in contact via our Social Media.
