Mrs Hemingway:Book Club Update & Giveaway Winner!

So we’ve finished our latest book club read Mrs Hemingway by Naomi Wood! So let us tell you what we thought…

So I have finished the book and I have to say it is a nice book to read and was quite enjoyable but I didn’t love it and probably wouldn’t recommend it to a friend. I really did enjoy hearing all of the four wives stories and getting to know them individually, we discovered more sides of Ernest Hemingway through the revelations of each wife. I think Naomi Wood wrote the book really well and showed no favouritism to any particular wife in the way she wrote the novel.

I thought the imagery and each individual narrative was written really well, and as a reader I was able to sympathise with each wife despite any previous actions. But I just have to say I didn’t love this book and it didn’t massively excite me, although in the beginning I had such high hopes they kind of just fizzled out towards the end. I feel as though maybe this book just wasn’t the right fit for me as a reader!

The book is very believable and engaging, very well written but I have to admit, for me, this book was a bit of a struggle. I’m not a fan of the historical genre as a whole (you’d never catch me watching Downton Abbey!) and I found it difficult to get through as I just wasn’t *that* interested. Having said that, it is very well written and I think had this been more my thing I would have enjoyed it. Overall, I’m glad I tried something out of my comfort zone and if I had to go out of my comfort zone, I’m glad it was with this book! The narrative of the wives was well written and believable and it was interesting to learn something more about Ernest Hemingway.
